A Reduced Carbon Footprint Date for Two

Nothing screams romance like a dumpster dive for two! Krystal Baugher has the 411 on what it takes to plan a fabulous reduced carbon footprint date.

I used to have a pretty big crush on Captain Planet, that green hair, those chiseled abs, the way he’d always save the world from big bad earth destroyers. Unfortunately, Captain Planet has never asked me out on a date, but over time I have channeled his heroic spirit to find ways that I can make romance a little more loving—not just toward my date, but toward the planet too.

Here are some reduced carbon footprint date ideas for two:

1. Keep it Local

Sure, you’ll more than likely go out in the city you live in, but I’m talking about where you go. Instead of a corporate chain try the home-town hipster-owned joint instead. For example, if you live in say, Denver, you can go to the Thin Man or PS Lounge for drinks instead of places like the Tavern.

2. Give Back

Or even better, do something for the area like volunteering at a community garden or animal shelter—fun, maybe even cute and totally helpful.

3. Get Your Bike On

Wherever the two of you decide to go, get there the environmentally-friendly way by biking or walking. Not only is it way more romantic it reduces your carbon footprint immensely.

4. Plant a Tree

It’s one of the most efficient and easiest ways to help the environment. Not only do they provide shade and oxygen, but they consume CO2 at the same time. Plus you get to get your hands dirty, in a clean way. Doesn’t get much better than that.

5. Dumpster Dive

Seriously, if the two of you are trying to be super-star hippies, there’s no better way than getting free food from your grocery store trash can. It also provides a thrilling rush, you get to dress in all black like you’re about to go rob someone; but instead, you’re saving perfectly good food from annihilation. Scoring big and nearly getting caught can also lead to some climatic moments elsewhere (if you get what I’m saying).

6. Shower With a Friend

After planting a tree and diving through dumpsters you’ll probably be pretty dirty. Get steamy and save water at the same time by getting wet together.

7. Do It with the Lights Out

Many people already do it this way. Personally, I like a little bit of light so I can see the other person’s face/body; because if I’m doing them, there’s a pretty good chance I like their face/body. If it’s nighttime though, I guess I should overcome my desire and consider the planet’s needs first. If I really want to see them, I’ll just have to bang them in the afternoon too.

So there you have it, tips that would make Captain Planet proud… or at least keep him from destroying you—either way, they work and they create memorable romantic encounters.
