Buh-Bye Winter! (Why Spring is Great for Lovers)

Did winter put you in a sexual hibernation? Spring is great for lovers and is right around the corner. Amy Angelilli has us all excited for next season.

Doesn’t it feel like everything is harder to do in the wintertime? Whether work or play it just requires more motivation, more energy and more willpower to leave the popcorn alone, turn Netflix off and put on a real pair of pants—ones without drawstrings. You—and I—aren’t imagining this as spring does bring good moods and lighter steps. Even science says so! That’s why, despite the hot chocolate, flannel PJs and snuggling, I do my happy dance once the calendar reads spring. Double that attitude when it comes to lovers experiencing spring together.

Here are five reasons why love is in the air in springtime—and not just in Paris:

Humans are programmed to rest when it’s dark and to be active when it’s light.

Resting doesn’t sound too sexy, does it? Activity (especially the horizontal kind) blooms with the flowers. More activity means more get up and go…to the bedroom. So don’t feel bad about a winter slump—you were just resting up for mating season!

More light changes our hormonal balance and improves our moods.

When it gets light earlier, the brain lowers melatonin production—the sleep hormone. Meanwhile, more sun means more of the happiness hormone, serotonin. Less need for sleep plus more happiness equals way more fun between the sheets come spring. Be sure to blame your hormones for a sluggish winter—you had nothing to do with it.

A seasonal rhythm (and the sun) puts a spring in our steps.

Since ancient times, our genes are programmed to focus on moving forward in the spring. Our bodies react positively to lovely weather, which means we’re still on a weather “high” once we come inside. This makes desires—for food and for sex—increase. So go ahead and have a double dip of ice cream because chances are you’ll burn off the extra calories in the sack.

Our senses are heightened following a cold, gray winter.

When the days become longer and the flowers start popping up, our senses are more in tune with weather changes, new colors and temperature increases. Because of this heightening, there’s usually overflow into other sensory activities. Sometimes the result is an increase in the friskiness factor before you even get to the bedroom! That’s why spring means couples getting frisky in parks as the flowerbeds are exploding.

Warmer weather means the winter coats are stashed in the back of the closet.

Ok so this isn’t scientific, but it’s very real! Have you every crossed paths with someone so bundled up that you couldn’t even tell if it was a man or woman? Getting your sexy on automatically happens when wardrobes change from winter snowsuits to spring t-shirts. Who really wants to show off anything when snow and ice are the norm? In spring, you can be bold and highlight your best features—without all the layers!

Grab your calendar and put a big star on March 20th, as the first day of spring will jump-start your smile, your walk and your love life. I’ll be counting down the days right along with you!
