Mindful Moment #46 – Straighten Your Crown

Take a deep breath
Crown of Years

How old do you feel? Like, on the inside? Because I have spent the last two decades feeling like a perpetual 27-year-old. Not on the outside, though. Nope. That ship is chugging toward the horizon faster than I care to admit. I tell myself it doesn’t matter. That I’m only as old as I feel. That I have a special set of longevity genes that let three of my four grandparents live well into their 80s and beyond. My grandpa George passed away at age 86 because he fell out of a pear tree! He had climbed the tree to shake out some reluctant pears. I think he may have also had a case of feeling much younger than he actually was.

In the informal polls I have taken amongst friends and acquaintances regarding this “how old do you feel?” question, almost everyone feels younger than they are. And, in part, that makes me happy for us. We get to hold on to carefree attitudes, smile a little easier, perhaps staying a bit more optimistic with our youthful outlooks. We can hope for the future and ignore the mortal coil.

But in equal part, it makes me a little sad that we take longer than we should to value what getting older grants us. It is a privilege to live into old age. Experience earns us perspective and wisdom. There is such a richness to a well and truly lived life that reminiscing about the past can feel as indulgent and intoxicating as a fine whiskey. Our bodies have scars and a story with every one of them. Our feet remember the steps to old dances. Our voices can sing a thousand songs.

If age is just a number, and if we consider this concept of age and aging as something self-defined, I wonder how we can harness both aspects of ourselves to live joyfully and wonderfully through all of our years, however many we may have. How can we best mesh the inner-self with the outer-self?

I think we can tap into our crown chakras to find the answer to that question. When your crown chakra is operating as it should, and when you are intentionally utilizing its channel of communication, you can tap into its unique gifts of self-actualization. Our crown chakra is said to be our connection to the Universe, to our personal and ancestral wisdom, and to all other entities from the microscopic to the vast. When you are in communion with the great “other” beyond yourself, you are able to see and experience how you fit into the big (and small) picture.

Today’s meditation is going to explore opening that crown chakra. The colors associated with it are white or violet. It is located at the very top of your head—some say it is just above your head or at the apex of your skull. If you’d like to listen to music during your meditation, try listening to something with a 963hz frequency included.

Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit. Relax your face, your jaw, your shoulders. Begin with a deep breath, holding it for five counts, and releasing. Repeat three times.

Let’s revisit each chakra beginning with the root chakra. Inhale and exhale as you focus your energy at the base of your spine. Move your attention up to the sacral chakra. Inhale and exhale as you focus on your lower abdomen. Next is the solar plexus chakra. Inhale and exhale as you focus on your upper abdomen. Bring your focus up to the heart chakra, located at your sternum. Inhale and exhale. Next is the throat chakra. Inhale and exhale as you focus on the base of your neck. Move up to the third eye chakra and inhale and exhale as you focus on the area between your eyebrows. And finally, bring your focus to the crown chakra. Inhale and exhale as you focus on the top of your head.

Continue to breathe deeply as you focus on the crown chakra, envisioning a violet or white light. If you’d like to go through the cycle of chakras again, please do so. Imagine drawing energy up your spine as you focus on each chakra.
Consider the following affirmations as you continue to breathe and focus on the crown chakra.

I am connected with the vast insight of the Universe.

My body is a beautiful home for my radiant soul.

Eternal peace and understanding flow to me and through me.

I am connected with all of creation.

I observe my challenges to understand what they can teach me.

I am an important connection in the web of life.

I release limiting thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve me.

I embrace life and cherish my spirit.

I radiate love and warmth.

Stay here as long as you like, breathing your energy up through the crown chakra. Be gentle with yourself when you end this meditation. I suggest grounding yourself outside with bare feet on the soil or bare hands on a tree. Write down any important insights you’d like to remember. Fix yourself some tea and have a few more moments with the Universe.

With this exercise, I hope things like age seem less important than how you feel about your soul’s mission in this lifetime. If your mission seems like a vague concept, don’t worry, and keep meditating. It will become clear enough when it’s time.

As always, friends,
Namaste
